The Golden Shopping Trolley Awards is a fantastic photographic competition which explores man-made or urban landscapes. The award was the brain child of Christian Fletcher after he saw a spate of shopping trolley photos. Approaching Ben at Team Digital, and roping in Tony Hewitt, the idea for a photo competition was born.
This differs to other competitions, not only in subject matter, but also in the way the judging is done. The top 40 entries were printed and displayed in Team Digital's Epson Print Gallery, and live critiqued/judged at a great gala night by Christian and Tony. Entry also included a sausage sizzle, what more could one ask for!!
There had been quite a build up this year (3rd year the competition has run). The prize pool was impressive, but more importantly, bragging rights were up for grabs. Last year I failed to make the finals, and so this year, myself and Nicole were on a mission, spending weekends traipsing around ugly industrial areas and smelly alleyways.
Perseverance paid off, and this year I was fortunate to get three images into the top 40 (and Nicole had four images on the wall!). Once again, there was a high standard of images (who knew ugly stuff could look so good!), and I was honestly quite shocked to come away with 2 big prizes!
1st place in the special "tank" category for which I won a generous $1000 voucher from Manfrotto/Kata
I also won 2nd place overall for this image of the air-conditioners on a local school roof. I had been waiting for the right clouds to shoot these, and loved that they look like "mini speakers". For the record, I also sufferred some minor verbal abuse from local hoons as I took the shot as they clearly thought I was nuts! Well this crazy lady is now the proud owner of an Eizo Colour Edge monitor :-)
I should probably apologise to Christian, Tony and Ben as there was much sniggering from the front row due to the hilarious messages as we tried to keep absent friends up to date with proceedings.
A fabulous night (well I would say that!), already looking forward to next year!!!
