A few months ago I won the Landscape category at the Click West Awards, and my prize was a day of one-on-one mentoring with Australian Grand Master Photographer Tony Hewitt. I am a big fan of Tony's work, and only a couple of weeks ago went to the South West Light exhibition in Yallingup and was totally inspired by the work of the ND5 boys. The prospect of shooting alongside Tony was both exciting and slightly nerve wrecking (I didn't want to embarrass myself!).
We met at the beach at sunrise (5am), and Tony must have brought his luck with him as the clouds were playing nicely.
We drove around a few different locations, and Tony was generous in sharing his thoughts and knowledge. He is a self proclaimed "people person", and extremely charismatic so I was totally at ease and thoroughly enjoyed the day.
My aim before the session was to gain an insight into how he "sees" scenes and images, and be inspired. Well I certainly achieved that and then some, the day has given me plenty of things to think about across the whole photography spectrum (from planning and composition, to design and post production). What a prize it was, and such an awesome opportunity, I feel very fortunate :-)
